Six landmark initiatives from past summits

Did you know that since the First Summit in Miami, 1994, several important initiatives have been launched in response to mandates issued by the heads of state and government of the Americas? Inter-American Democratic Charter

In Quebec City, Canada, leaders instructed their foreign ministers to prepare an Inter-American Democratic Charter "to reinforce OAS instruments for the active defense of representative democracy". The Charter, adopted by OAS Member States on September 11, 2001 in Lima, Peru is an affirmation of their shared commitment to democracy in the region.

Follow-Up Mechanism of the Inter-American Convention against Corruption

Another outcome of the Quebec City Summit was the establishment of the Inter-American Convention against Corruption and the Follow-Up Mechanism for its Implementation (MESICIC), which is the principal cooperation instrument among OAS Member States to prevent, detect, punish and eradicate corruption in the Americas.

Inter-American Social Protection Network (IASPN)

At the Fifth Summit in Trinidad and Tobago, leaders endorsed the creation of the IASPN which enables countries to fight poverty through technical assistance programs and by sharing best practices, experiences and knowledge on social protection.

Study on the Drug Problem in the Americas

In response to a mandate issued at the Sixth Summit in Cartagena, the OAS prepared a "Report on the Drug Problem in the Americas". The report consists of two parts: an analysis on the consumption, business and impact of illegal drugs in the region and possible scenarios and options for the future.

Connecting the Americas 2022

At the Sixth Summit in 2012, leaders of the Western Hemisphere committed to achieve universal access to reliable, clean, and affordable electricity to all communities in the Americas by 2022. This initiative supports the Energy and Climate Partnership of the Americas (ECPA), which promotes regional collaboration on low-carbon development, energy security, and climate change.

Small Business Network of the America (SBNA)

Small Business Network of the America (SBNA)

Launched in 2012, the SBNA promotes entrepreneurship, innovation and small business growth in the Western Hemisphere. SBNA seeks to build connections between institutions by providing counseling, training, financing and other support services to small and medium businesses.
