In preparation for the
Sixth Summit of the Americas,
held in Cartagena, Colombia on April 14-15, 2012, a series
of activities revolving around the central theme
“Connecting the Americas: Partners for Prosperity", were held
for civil society and social actor participation and
contribution. The five thematic areas: Poverty, Inequality, and Inequity, Disaster Risk Reduction and Management, Access to and use of Information and Communication Technologies, Citizen Security and Transnational Organized Crime, and Integration of Physical Infrastructure in the Americas formed the basis of these activities. They were designed to include both virtual and face-to-face components thus providing opportunities to effectively channel recommendations to the discussion and negotiation of Summit mandates.

Virtual Consultations: Summit Talk
Summit Talk, a series of online consultations and each consultation lasted approximately 3-4 weeks to facilitate broad participation and was moderated by experts. A report of these consultations is available online and was also transmitted to the Member States.

Policy Roundtables: The Road to Cartagena
An open
forum/roundtable in which experts presented their perspectives on the Sixth Summit themes and discussed these
themes with Member States and the general public.

Consultation / Recommendation Sessions
Meetings in Washington, DC, of social actor representatives to propose, debate and compile concrete recommendations on the specific Summit themes. Recommendations were presented directly to Member States to inform their negotiations of Summit commitments.
